Recorder. Favouring French references and representing considerable library work, this article remains unpublished and may need some updating. It shows that, in some 200 illustrations in the Warburg Institute collection of the Mercury and Argus theme, Mercury is most frequently depicted with a recorder, although in Antiquity Mercury is never associated with a duct-flute (in Ovid he plays a syrinx). An attempt is made to explain this, and to show its effect on recorder symbolism.

During the long period of occupation by the Turks, Orthodox Christian communities in remote and mountainous areas, and isolated monasteries, were left undisturbed, resulting in a continuous tradition of Byzantine wall-painting in areas such as Cappadocia, and parts of the Carpathians and elsewhere in the Balkans. In the stereotyped Nativity scene, the shepherds are shown with pipes and more often, and over a longer period, in the Trodos than elsewhere, and some later representation are recognisable as recorders.
